Project Scope
The 5G-CARMEN project was a medium-term effort to significantly drive the research, implementation, and demonstration of refined 5G solutions for the Cooperative, Connected, and Automated Mobility. In 5G-CARMEN important European industries, academics and innovative SMEs committed to achieve worldwide impact by conducting extensive trials across an important corridor (by people/goods traffic volumes), from Bologna to Munich, spanning 600 km of roads, connecting three European regions (Bavaria, Tirol and Trentino/South-Tyrol) across three countries. Cooperative maneuvering, situation awareness, video streaming, and green driving were the cross-border use cases targeted by 5G-CARMEN pilots in order to maximize the project commercial, societal, end environmental impact.
Achievements
The 5G-CARMEN use cases were refined and specified. Also, the 5G KPIs were identified and the architecture for cross-border network were defined. A survey of existing inter-operator cross-border solutions in Italy, Austria and Germany were ongoing including MNO’s 5G roadmap. The use of Geoservice and AQMP server were discussed across several use cases. Cloud Services as well as the inter-MEC connectivity requirements were evaluated against the use case requirements. Fundamental improvements to the network implementations and configurations were defined in cooperation with the 5GAA. Priority was given to enable seamless connectivity when entering the border and switching from one PLMN to another. Deployment locations for 5G gNBs at the Italian/Austrian Border were defined.
5G-CARMEN business potentials were described. The results of 5G-CARMEN were presented at several events such as EUCAD 2019, the Future Mobility Week 2019 and the 5G AA Conference 2020. At several events, 5G-CARMEN, 5GCroCo and 5G MOBIX, all three ICT-18 projects, presented themselves jointly. In addition, the three projects together organized a workshop at EUCNC’19.
5G-CARMEN outcomes have been also disseminated through the project website and social media.
